Panel Presentation: "Middle Ground"

This year, Time English School would like to showcase their long-term students’ abilities through a discussion-based activity widely known on YouTube as “Middle Ground”, where two groups of people from different backgrounds have short discussions regarding the prompts given by the MC.  Time English School has selected a handful of students with an average study-span of 12 years and will divide them by Male/Female, High School/University, and Only Child/Siblings.

Example topics:

  • Male / Female
“I never ask for directions, even when I’m lost.”

  • High School Student / University Student
    “YouTube is addictive.”

  • Only Child / Siblings
“I want to live with my parents until I get a job.”

A sample of the Middle Ground format can be viewed here.

In order to enhance the spontaneity of the discussions and underscore their authenticity, they kindly ask for your assistance in generating relevant topics for discussion. If you would like to do so, please write a suitable topic below and submit it upon entry at the PLS Convention on June 23rd.

*Due to time constraints, it may not be possible to address all suggested topics. Thank you for understanding.

Group Work

A: Proactive English with Ray Ormandy (English)

Practice steps for teachers and front desk staff to encourage students to be proactive, not only reactive, in their English use.

B: Sharing Teaching Ideas for Junior and Senior High School Classes (English)

Share ideas on teaching junior and senior high school students, including how to keep these students engaged long-term. Teachers from Time English School will also share details on preparing for the “Middle Ground” panel.

C: Tailoring for Irregular Classes (English / Japanese)

Students don’t always fit neatly into a particular rank or typical class style. For example:

  • Students with experience in other systems

  • Students joining in upper elementary with limited experience

  • Students planning to move abroad

In this group, we’ll share ideas about meeting such students’ needs.

D: Bridging Elementary and Junior High School English (Japanese)

Discuss how to connect the skills required for English studies at junior high school with what students have learned in PLS rank classes.

E: Discussing Issues Faced at the Front Desk (Japanese)

Discuss issues commonly faced by front desk staff, including:

  • Younger students crying or not wanting to enter the classroom

  • Students being busy with cram school and other activities

  • Getting parents/guardians to be involved with homework

  • Receiving complaints about a child’s behavior from other parents/guardians

  • Avoiding communication issues between front staff and teachers
